Pokémon Card Centering: How to Measure It and What Grade It Allows
Centering is the one condition factor you can measure with a ruler, and it's the most common reason a flawless-looking card misses a 10. Here's how to measure it and roughly how much leeway each grade gives.
How to measure centering
- Measure the left border and the right border in the same units (a centering tool, a ruler on a scanned image, or pixels on a straight-on photo).
- Divide the larger border by the total of both borders. That's the larger side of the ratio. Example: left 2.2 mm, right 1.8 mm → 2.2 / 4.0 = 55%. Centering is 55/45.
- Repeat for top vs. bottom. The worse of the two axes is the number that matters.
- Do the same on the back.
Tip: a photo taken straight-on, with the card flat and the camera parallel to it, is surprisingly accurate. Angled photos exaggerate one side.
Approximate centering tolerances
PSA publishes centering guidance in its grading standards. Approximately:
| Grade | Front | Back |
|---|---|---|
| PSA 10 Gem Mint | ~55/45–60/40 or better | ~75/25 or better |
| PSA 9 Mint | ~60/40–65/35 or better | ~90/10 or better |
| PSA 8 NM-MT | ~65/35–70/30 or better | ~90/10 or better |
Treat these as guidelines, not guarantees — check PSA's current published standards, and remember other graders (CGC, BGS) use their own scales. Centering at the edge of a tolerance plus any other flaw usually drops the grade.
Why centering matters so much for value
Because a 10 can be worth several times a 9, a card that's 62/38 on the front may be capped at a 9 no matter how perfect its corners are. If that cap makes the expected graded value lower than the raw price, selling raw is the better move. The expected-value method shows how to run that comparison.

What centering do you need for a PSA 10?
PSA's standards call for roughly 55/45 to 60/40 or better on the front and about 75/25 or better on the back, alongside essentially flawless corners, edges and surface. Check PSA's current published standards before submitting.
Is front or back centering more important?
Front centering is judged much more strictly. Back centering has a wider tolerance, but badly off-center backs still cap the grade.
Can I fix off-center cards?
No. Centering is a factory characteristic. Trimming a card to improve centering is an alteration, and graders will not give it a numeric grade.
