PSA vs CGC vs BGS for Pokémon Cards: Which Grader Should You Use?

Updated · 6 min read

The right grader is a per-card financial decision, not a brand loyalty one. What matters is how much buyers pay for a given grade from each company, after fees.

The short version

Compare on resale value, not grade

A "10" is not a 10 is not a 10. The same card's sold prices at PSA 10, CGC 10 and BGS 9.5 can differ a lot. Before choosing, look up recent sold comps for your specific card at each grader's likely grade, then run the expected-value math for each. Choose the grader with the highest expected net, not the highest number on the slab.

Frequently asked questions

Which grading company is best for Pokémon cards?

For most cards you intend to sell, PSA usually yields the highest resale prices and the most liquid market. CGC can make sense for lower-value cards or where its top label tiers sell well. Compare sold comps for your specific card before deciding.

Is a CGC 10 worth as much as a PSA 10?

Usually not for the standard CGC 10 — buyers typically pay less than for a PSA 10 of the same card. CGC's Pristine and Perfect labels can close or exceed that gap on some cards.

What are BGS subgrades?

Beckett assigns separate scores for centering, corners, edges and surface, plus an overall grade. A card with perfect 10s across all four subgrades receives the rare Black Label.
